Being a SAHM (Stay at Home Mom) can be super rewarding as you get to be home to raise your children. However, sometimes it is not monetarily feasible or maybe you just want to make a little money on the side in addition to the main breadwinner. This is where a side hustle comes in.
What is a Side Hustle?
A side hustle is anything that is taken on part-time in addition to one’s full-time job. For us SAHMs that would literally be anything that you could do in addition to being your awesome, full-time, Mom-selves.
What Can You Do as a Side Hustle?
There is literally a million and one things you could do as a side hustle; you are only limited by your imagination. There are five main categories of side hustles you can do.
1. Selling Physical Products
You could sell stuff for a company that you really like or use yourself, such as Avon or Discovery Toys. This involves selling stuff, usually through parties and booking more parties through people who come to parties and so forth. This is a good way to go if you have a large group of friends who are interested in the same things you are.
Another avenue you could go down is selling things online. You could go to thrift stores and yard sales to find things to sell online to people through websites like ebay. This is great if you have knowledge about certain items that is not common knowledge and people are willing to pay for.
Alternately you could make your own crafts and sell them online through websites like etsy. You can do a little research to see if people are buying what you have to offer and what they are paying for it. This is a great way to go if you have a craft that people are willing to pay for.
2. Selling Digital Products
This one can be a lot of fun and you get to explore things that interest you. This one can involve a little bit of work on your part, as you will have to find digital products for you to sell and then have an avenue for you to sell through.
These can include places such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Or you can have your own website where you promote products to your audience.
3. Creating Digital Products
On the flip side to selling online, you could go out and make your own products. These can include eBooks, digital courses, and online membership programs.
Through personal experience, I have found that while these are a great way for some passive income, especially the eBooks and digital courses, there is a great deal of time and energy that must be spent to set these up. Once you have them in place however it is a great way for you to have a residual income.
4. Offering a Service
This one I feel is the most intimidating but can be extremely lucrative. Offering a service can include freelancing and coaching.
The main idea behind this is that the more time a person has with you, the more they pay. So if you have a solution to a problem, say you are really good at public speaking, you could offer to train and teach someone else how to be a great public speaker.
This is a really good way for you to go if you have a skill that others are willing to pay to learn. If you get really creative this can include almost anything if you find the right niche to advertise your service to.
5. Advertising
This one is where you advertise for other people whether through your own website or advertise products for others. The main avenue for this one can include Google AdSense and affiliate marketing. This is a great way to monetize your website, blog, or page if you don’t have your products or services to sell. This is an extreme passive income, and once you have it set up, you only have to incorporate the code into your webpages, and it is then done for you.

This is great because you can build your website up around anything that interests you. So literally you can turn any interest into a money-making website. The earning potential is only limited by you.
How Much Time Do You Need for a Side Hustle?
This is one on the best parts about having a side hustle; you can literally devote as much or as little time as you want or have toward it. I have seen some mom’s side hustles turn into income replacing jobs and their partner is able to “retire” from their job.
For others, their side hustle is just something to do in their spare time and make what they call “fun money”. My best friend does this by selling her crafts that she makes in her free time for fun. The money-making part is just an added perk to what she is doing already.
Generally, the more time you have to invest into your side hustle, the more money you can make.
Wrapping Up
A side hustle can be a great way for you earn anywhere from some extra “fun money” to a serious fun-time income. It all depends on the market that you get into and how much time you are able & willing to devote to your side hustle. In all, there are five types of side hustles you can get involved in depending on what you want to do:
- Selling Physical Products
- Selling Digital Products
- Creating Digital Products
- Offering a Service
- Advertising
Each one can be lucrative, some more than others, all depending on what you want to do, the market for what you are offering, and how much time you have to invest in your side hustle.
